Sitting at a computer, always having your phone in your hand, hours spent driving, carrying your children, chronic stress. It all adds up until your body starts to complain: back pain, neck tension, hunched shoulders and constant tiredness.

What is Global Postural Reeducation?

Global Postural Reeducation (GPR) is a physiotherapy method developed to assess and correct postural changes and muscle imbalances that underlie many types of musculoskeletal pain.

GPR treats the body as a whole. After a detailed, individual postural assessment, therapeutic exercises are used to stretch shortened muscle chains. For everyday life, your physiotherapist suggests ways to actively improve how you sit, walk, work and rest.

When can GPR help?

GPR is particularly useful for people with:

  • Back pain / lower back pain, neck pain / neck tension, headaches of muscular origin (tension headaches), sciatica and a herniated disc managed with conservative treatment
  • Postural changes such as hyperkyphosis (a rounded upper back), scoliosis, changes in spinal curvature, forward-rounded shoulders, knock knees or bow legs
  • Strain from computer work, driving or caring tasks (for example, carrying a baby)

It is also a useful option for people who, even without severe pain, feel their posture is asymmetrical or problematic and do not want to wait for their first episode of acute pain.

GPR for women, during pregnancy and after birth

At Clínica Matriz, GPR is designed especially for women and mothers. During pregnancy, it helps adapt posture to shifts in the centre of gravity, relieve lower back and pelvic girdle pain, and maintain mobility through gentle, safe exercises adapted to the body's changes in each trimester.

After birth, it supports postural recovery following months of compensatory changes, helps with lower back and neck pain, and reduces shoulder strain when picking up your baby. It can be combined with pelvic health physiotherapy and other postnatal rehabilitation care.

For women with active adult lives, with or without children, it is particularly useful for those with sedentary computer-based jobs or work that involves spending many hours standing.

Benefits of Global Postural Reeducation

With consistency, GPR can offer:

  • A significant reduction in chronic musculoskeletal pain, visible improvement in posture (a better-aligned spine and more open shoulders), and increased overall flexibility and mobility
  • Stronger muscles supporting the spine and major joints, improved breathing, better proprioception, more energy and less heaviness and fatigue, as well as prevention of episodes of acute pain and worsening of existing postural changes
